Abstract

519,864. Cable joints. SIEMENS BROS., & CO., Ltd., and WOOD, H. G. Oct. 5, 1938, No. 28864. [Class 38 (i)] The oil space in the joint casing for a cable having impregnating oil within a lead sheath outside which gas pressure is maintained, is reduced so as to be comparable in volume to that in the cable itself The joint is covered in the usual way with wrapped insulation 8 and the tapered ends of the latter are fitted with metal inserts 10 which may be made in halves joined by screws 24. The sleeve 9 is then slid-over the whole and drawn down to fit closely and wiped on to the sheath 2 of the cable. A filler plug 20 leads to a distributing groove around the inserts 10. A brass tape 11 on the sleeve is bound with wire 12 and connection is made by binding wire 13 and copper strips to the outer sheath 4. A copper tube 14 encloses the joint and is closed at each end by a ferrule 15 with a lead collar 16 wiped on to the sheath 4. A casing 18 made in halves to interlock with a groove 21 in the tube 14 is filled with solder and a pocket 19 with compound.
