Abstract
295,724. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Eby, E. D.). Aug. 18, 1927, [Convention date]. Cable joints.-The end of an oil filled cable 1 is sealed and connection is made to the adjacent cable end by means of a porcelain &c. shell 24 secured at one end to a stud 9 soldered to the cable and coupled by a sleeve 35 to the corresponding cable end, and at the other to a ring 21 welded to a sleeve 20 wiped on to the sheathing 6. The shell 24 encloses an oil space that communicates with the interior of the cable by passages 10 in the stud 9 so that the oil has access to the varnished cambric &c. tape 15 wound over the stepped paper insulation 7. A metal cylinder 43 encloses the joint and contains oil, plugs 44, 23 being provided for filling or for connecting an expansion chamber to the oil spaces. The electrostatic stresses are distributed by (1) a metal braid 18 connected to the lead sheath 4 and wound over the coned end of the tape 15, (2) a shield 45 bolted to the ring 21, (3) a shield 36 mounted on perforated discs 34 its ends being close to the shell 24, and (4) a series of insulating cylinders 38 - - 40 supported on wooden blocks 41.
