Loose - weight apparatus. - A capacity-increasing device for weighing-apparatus comprises one or more weights which are pivotally mounted on a common axis of rotation coincident with that of the weigh-beam, said weights being adapted to be brought into a position in which they bear on a part of the weighing- mechanism. As shown, a weighing- platform 1 is supported on knife-edges 6 on the short arm 7 of a weigh-beam, which is pivoted on pedestals 10 and has its long arm divided into two parallel members 12, 13. A series of plate-shaped weights 22 are pivoted on a common knife-edge 24 projecting from one of the pedestals 10 and in alignment with the knife-edge 8 of the weigh-beam. Said weights 22 are adapted to bear at their free ends in recesses 31a in a cranked extension 15 of the weigh-beam, but are normally held out of contact with the extension 15 by means of a series of cranked levers 19 which are pivoted on a bolt 17 and are operated by a cam-member 30. The cam-member 30 is rotated by a hand wheel 25 to lower any desired number of the weights 22 on to the extension 15. When all the weights 22 have been lowered into operative position, a continued rotation of the hand wheel 25 causes the weights to be simultaneously lifted and a large weight 40 to be lowered into operative position on the other side of the machine, further rotation again causing the lowering of the small weights 22. The number of the weights in use is communicated through a flexible shaft 44 and pulleys 45 to indicating-discs 43. The weighing mechanism is relieved during the application of the weights by a wedge 47 which engages the short arm 7 of the weigh-beam unless the hand wheel is in a certain position.
