In a weighing machine having one or more stepped discs 5, 6, 7 on the indicator spindle 1 for use in setting type wheels, exploring segments 17 ... 20 mounted on a pivot 31 rock into engagement with the stepped discs and thereafter a set of feelers 24 ... 27 geared to the type wheels 29 advance in a perpendicular direction into contact with the steps in the exploring segments. This arrangement allows stepped discs 5, 6, 7 of minimum size and weight to be used. In effecting a printing operation, a driving shaft 12 is rotated thereby causing a rack 13 to free an angle lever 16 and permit the exploring segments 17 ... 20, which are slightly out of balance, to swing against the stepped discs 5, 6, 7. A guide 22 prevents bending of the exploring segments. A rail 23 on the rack at the same time permits the feelers 24 ... 27 to advance under spring action into engagement with steps in the exploring segments, at the same time setting the type wheels 29 by means of racks.
