434,708. Speed and distance indicators. PAULIG, O., 9, Hansastrasse, Lubeck, Germany. May 9,1935, No. 13677. [Class 106 (iii)] Speed and distance indicators for use on vehicles including ships comprise friction wheel gearing operated by two pendulums which interact on one another so that one pendulum b is set according to the acceleration while the other c is set in the vertical position. The pendulum b consists of a cylindrical sector pivoted within a fixed cylinder a and supporting the spindle d of the second pendulum comprising a hollow cylinder c. Within the cylinder c is a clockwork-driven disc f driving a disc g which drives a friction wheel k mounted on a carriage h slidable in the cylinder c, the wheel k driving a counter m. A friction wheel o driven by the disc f has a toothed spindle n operating a rack on the carriage h. The spindle n and another spindle r carrying a balance weight s are axially displaced by cams p, q carried by the cylinder b, the cams being designed to stop the rotation of the cylinder c and to effect a displacement of the wheel o from the centre of the disef in linear relationship to the acceleration. The speed may be read on a drum provided on the wheel o or by divisions on the carriage h, while the drum l and counter m give the distance travelled. A second apparatus arranged perpendicular to the first may be used for simultaneous measurement from a second plane of reference. To minimize friction on the cams p, q, the ends of the spindles n, r may be fitted with small rollers. Contact between the parts n, p, q, r may be ensured by magnetizing them.
