Abstract
534,644. Grinding propeller blades. EBY, I. D. Sept. 11, 1939, No. 25581. [Class 60] [Also in Group XXXIII] A recording pitchometer for propeller blades has a recording medium which can swing about the propeller axis and means to draw on the medium a chart in the form of a series of lines each representing the profile of the propeller in the corresponding radial plane. The chart is used as an indicator when grinding the propeller during the finishing operation. In its simplest form the instrument includes a shaft 80 which can be centred in the-propeller hub by cone member 81, 82. A graduated disc 84 may be clamped to the shaft 80 and an arm 87<SP>1</SP> pivoted to the shaft 80 may be clamped at 87 to the disc 84. The arm 87<SP>1</SP> carried a drawing board 89 to which is pinned a paper sheet 90. A slider 91 which may slide radially across the board 89 carries a vertically sliding rod 92. The latter carries at its end a roller 93 to bear on the propeller blade and a marker 94 to bear on the paper 90. The arm 87<SP>1</SP> carries a pointer 88 to co-operate with the scale 84. In use the arm 87<SP>1</SP> is fixed in a series of positions differing say by 5 degrees and in each position the slider 91 is moved across the board 89 with the roller 93 engaging the propeller surface and the marker 94 engaging the paper 90 so that a series of lines are drawn thereon. From these lines defects in the manufacture of the propeller can be ascertained. These defects may be removed by grinding the surface of the propeller. During this operation the chart is used as a template to indicate when sufficient material has been removed. In a modification the drawing board is replaced by a roll of paper, the axis of the roll being either radial to or parallel with the propeller axis. In this construction charts may be drawn to show the profile of the propeller blade at a specified radius. In this case the radial distance of the slider 91 is kept constant while the arm corresponding to the arm 87<SP>1</SP> is given an arcuate movement.
