Abstract
208,692. Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Soderberg, C. R.). Dec. 21, 1922, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Testing balance of rotary apparatus.- In balancing machines of the type in which the body under test is rotated on a movable platform supported on a movable fulcrum as described in Specification 205,486, an adjustable oountBru'eight is provided so that the unbalanced centrifugal forces may be balanced in order to determine the mass and position of the balance weights required to be attached to the rotary body. The body 26 under test is mounted on roller bearings 25 ona platform 2 which is supported by springs 3 and a movable fulcrum 4. A hand wheel 13 and a screw 12 are arranged to move the fulcrum which consists of a transverse beam 5 having rollers 8 upon which the platform 2 rests. Jacks 15 actuated by a hand wheel 18 are provided for lifting the platform off the fulcrum. An electric motor 29 drives the test body 26 through a flexible connection 28, and also drives through gearing 31 a shaft 32 upon which the discs 37 carrying the adjustable counterweights for determining the balance weights are mounted. The discs have extension sleeves 38, 39 in screw-threaded engagement with adjusting sleeves 46, 45 the former of which is loosely keyed on a shaft 32, the latter being loosely keyed on the sleeve 38. By moving the sleeves 45, 46 axially by forks engaging collars 51 and actuated by hand-wheels 53, 54, the discs 36, 37 may be adjusted to vary the relative angular position of the counterweights 43, 44 carried by them. A pointer 56 is provided having a sleeve 57 which is connected to the disc 36 bv a link 58, and to a pin 60 on the disc 37 by a link 59. This pointer indicates the centre line between the radii to the centres of gravity of the weights 43, 44. An indicator 64 is attached to the rim of the disc 37, and the rim of the disc 36 is graduated. In operation the fulcrum 4 is moved into the plane AA, and the test body 26 is rotated by the motor 29 at any desired speed. The discs 36, 37 are adjusted relatively until vibration of the platform 2 ceases as will be shown by a dial indicator 20 on the. bed actuated by an arm 21 on the platform. The pointer 56 then indicates the longitudinal plane in which the balance weight is to be applied in the plane B, B, and the indicator 64 shows the magnitude of the weight to be applied. The platform 2 is then raised from the fulcrum 4 by the jacks 15 and moved so that the fulcrum is in the plane B. B, when the operation is repeated to determine the correction to be applied in the plane A, A.
