Abstract
223,812. Young, J. C. March 24, 1924. Smoke-conduit systems; spark-extinguishers.- A smoke-cleaning and spark-arresting apparatus for use in connection with locomotives and other boiler furnaces comprises a steam exhaust pipe 10 arranged in the smokebox 11 and having its lower forked ends 10<1> connected to steam exhaust boxes 17, whilst its upper end communicates with the atmosphere and passes through a smoke conduit 12 extending rearwardly to a water tank 22 on the tender 23, the tank having an apertured cover 24 and a drain 26. Communication between the exhaust boxes 17 and the smokebox 11 through openings 20<a> and also with the exhaust pipe 10 is controlled by apertured slide valves 19 operated from the cab. An auxiliary steam pipe 18 connecting one of the smokeboxes 17 with the smoke conduit 12 serves to induce a rearward draught through the conduit 12 which may also be provided with a fan 13 and with one or more hoods 12b having flap valves 12<a> operated, if desired, from the cab. A fan 14 may also be provided in the smokebox 11.
