Abstract

262,263. Williams, L. G. H. W. Sept. 10, 1925. Air admission to flues to check draught.-Air is admitted to the chimney of a locomotive or to a point in the smoke box immediately adjacent and vertically below the base of the chimney by an adjustable inlet valve 1 mounted on the smoke-box shell 2 and adjusted from the engine cab by a rod 6. A pipe 3 leads the air to a point beneath the petticoat 4 of the chimney, the end 3a of the pipe being turned horizontally and cut off at an angle so that ashes cannot settle in and clog the pipe. In a modification a ring-shaped pipe having a number of upwardly and inwardly directed inlet ports is secured to the petticoat of the chimney and communicates by a pipe with the air inlet valve 1.
