Abstract
217,765. Heninghem, C., and Newman, C. P. June 18, 1923. Dirt, excluding; stops, adjustable. - The spindle and stuffing box of a screw-down valve are provided with a protecting cover which serves also as an adjustable stop to limit the maximum opening of the valve. The head portion u of the valve is provided with a screwed collar a having a gap a to receive a bolt g, Fig. 4. The protecting cover, Fig. 3, is provided with internal threads to screw on to the collar a, and with two or more vertical slots k. The cover is adjustable vertically so that the maximum opening of the valve is limited by the engagement of the shoulder h, Fig. 2, with the part j of the cover. A washer b, Fig. 4, is secured to the upper side of the collar a, and supports a small bolt g so that it may slide radially. When the bolt is pressed inwards, it allows the cover to be rotated, but when the bolt is drawn outwards into one of the slots k, it prevents such rotation. When in its outer position, it is retained by a catch m, Fig. 5, carried by a loose washer e which pivots on the body by means of lugs engaging in slots o, Fig. 2. A spring f retains the catch in its upper position, from which it is released by hand as shown.
