Butt joints.-Pipe-like butt joints are formed by means which in addition to providing axial compressive forces also provide axial converging forces to render the joint tight; in addition, the packing between the butt ends may be shaped so that pressure within the pipe will also act to render the joint tighter. Opposed segments S with interfitting bevelled claws 11 and gripping claws 5 are loosely held to each pipe end in opposed relationship by spring grip means 18 or band 19 while the packing P is placed between the joint and covered by a flexible band 16. The claws 5 are adapted to grip raised rings on the pipe ends or rings clamped to the pipe ends. On tightening nuts on the bolts 9, the segments are drawn together to cause axial compressive stresses, and the bevelled surfaces 14 of the segments bearing on the raised periphery after packing causes convergent transverse stresses. In Fig. 3 are shown pipes meeting at an angle, the packing P being so shaped to admit of this, and, in addition, provide internal flange portions 22 which are expanded against the shaped inner edges of the joint by the internal fluid pressure within the pipe after the joint has been formed as previously described.
