Abstract
145,190. Helps, G. April 14, 1919. Pipes.-Cast iron or steel main pipes are joined together by means of rings a of malleable or wrought iron or steel, or of an easily welded material, which are secured into position in each end of the pipe as it is cast, or are expanded into position in cast iron pipes b shaped as shown in Fig. 5. The pipes can then be welded at such rings. To ensure a tight joint between the rings and the pipes the rings are heated before the metal for the pipes b is run into the mould, or the rings may be coated with a soft fluxing iron, or with a china cement or glaze, or a mixture of red lead and turpentine. The ends of the rings a may be plain or conical, or this may be splayed. A recess may be cast into the end of the pipe to receive a ring of packing, Fig. 4.
