Butt joints.-In a pipe joint wherein the adjacent ends b of the pipes to be connected are bent to U-shape to engage metal rings a, the collar formed thereby serving as a bearing surface for loose flanges e, the pipe ends are thickened to strengthen them, prior to bending, by a jumping- up or like process. The faces c of the flanges are preferably inclined to accommodate a soft metal packing ring d of approximately trapezoidal cross-section, while the rings a may be provided with outwardly directed extensions f as shown.
