Abstract

4135. Ussher, L., and Hall, A. March 16 Butt joints.-Relates to pipe joints of the type in which the pipes 1, 1<1>, Fig. 1, are provided with flanges 2, 2<1> bevelled or curved on their outer faces and adapted to be embraced by segmental rings 4 having corresponding internal bevels or curves, so that when the ring is closed around the flanges, the bevels coact to draw the pipes together. In one construction according to the invention, the ring comprises two semicircular segments 4, 4<1>, Fig. 1, which are provided at their ends with projecting lugs 6, 6<1> having wedge-shaped grooves 9, 9<1> adapted to co-operate with a wedge-shaped clip 9", Fig. 2, to draw the segments together. The ring may consist of three or more separate segments, or of a number of segments hinged together so as to leave only two free ends to be joined by means of the wedge-shaped clips 9". The construction may also be employed for jointing a closing-disk to the flanged end of a pipe. In a modified construction, Fig. 9, the inner or adjacent faces of the flanges 2<11>, 2<111> are not plane, but are arranged to form a recess into which sealing-material 12<1> or a correspondingly-shaped washer formed in one or more parts may be placed. The recess may be of V or other shape, and the segments 4, 4' are preferably drawn together by means of grooved lugs and wedge-shaped fastening-clips as previously described.
