Abstract
141,321. Snead &. Co. Iron Works, (Assignees of Macdonald, H. P., and Thomson, W. S.). April 4, 1919, [Convention date]. Overlap joints with yielding inner part expanded; plates &c., securing pipes &c. to.-The pipe to be joined to, say, a spider is made of slightly larger diameter than the latter, which is heated and then shrunk on to it. The socket is made partly of tapered form and the end of the pipe heated and forced against the socket by means of a wedge. Fig. 2 shows a joint in section. The wedge 9 forces the end of the pipe 6 against the portion 7<a> of the socket, which is circular at 7 and of enlarged diameter and hexagonal in shape at 7<a>. Lips 8 on the socket are turned over the edge of the pipe, and overlap the wedge also if the latter is left as part of the joint. The joint is stated to be particularly adapted for automobile propeller shafts.
