Abstract

223,300. Apsey, C. H., (trading as Attwood & Co., F.). July 17, 1923. Joints formed by molten metal or alloy.-In joints between pipes, &c., 1, 2, of the type in which fusible joining material is inserted between the surfaces to be united during the setting-up of the joint, the joining material comprises a tubular body 3 of such a size as to make the set-up joint a snug fit and having an annular end or broad flange 3<B> to locate the members of the joint, leaving a small hole 3<c> to prevent a rise of pressure due to confined steam or air expansion in the pipes. The body 3, which may be of brass, iron, or solder, may also be provided with a flange 4, Fig. 3, at its opposite end. In a modification, the liner comprises brass ribbon, with a flange (or flanges) along its edge, which may be bent around the smaller tube to be joined and cut off to form a completely surrounding liner giving a snug fit. The joint is set up cold, heat then beng applied, preferably by means of an electric current. Flux may be run into or coated on the parts before setting up, the outer or both surfaces of the body 3 being grooved for the reception of said flux.
