Abstract

579,409. Pipe joints. PHILLIPS & CO., Ltd., J. A., and BOHLE, E. W. April 25, 1944, No. 7700. [Class 99 (i)] [Also in Group XXXI] The ends of cycle frame tubes c to be joined on the bottom bracket, head and like tubular parts a are provided with a sheet metal liner e welded therein and having a flange f outside the tube which is shaped to seat on and is welded to the external surface of the tubular part. Pressed steel members are rolled into split tubular members which are inserted in the ends of the frame tubes c and projecting ends of the liners are upset to form the flanges f. The liners e thus formed are welded to the frame tubes c and the flanges f are then welded to the steel tube a to form a complete bottom bracket assembly. The whole bracket may then be dipped in a molten bath of brass. The end portions of the liners e are provided with tapered fingers g. The construction may be applied to the joints of the head and top tube and to the joint of the top tube and seat pillar. In the latter case the joint is made on to a split lug which is welded on to the seat pillar to provide for the clamping bolt of the seat pillar stem and for securing of the seat pillar stays.
