510,263. Jointing pipes to walls etc.; tube expanders; soldering: FOWLER, C. R., and GENERAL INVENTIONS, Ltd. Jan. 31, 1938. No. 3006. [Class 99 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] A nipple for jointing a pipe to a wall of a tank, cylinder or another pipe comprises a metal tube 1 provided with an internal bead 4 and having a part 3 of reduced diameter forming a shoulder 2 against which is carried a hollow ring 5 charged with solder 6. The bead is expanded by a tool 7, 8, 10 and the solder 6, after heating, forms a tight joint between the nipple, the ring 5 and the wall 13. The reduced part of the nipple and the ring 5 may be tinned at 14 to induce the solder to flow. When the wall 13 is curved the bead and the end of the nipple and the hollow ring are made to correspond to the wall curvature. In order to reduce strain on the wall of the tank or the like the free end of the nipple may be steadied by a stay. The stay may take the form of a disc around the nipple near its free end supported by side members secured to the wall of the tank by feet tinned on the underside and heated so that they adhere to the wall.
