Abstract
823,751. Pipe joints. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING Inc. May 24, 1957 [Oct. 1, 1956], No. 16522/57. Class 99(1). A pair of tubes 10, 12 at least one of which is of austenitic steel alloy high in chromium nickel content, have wall thicknesses A of one inch or more and are joined by multi-layer welding the end portions together which are reduced in wall thicknesses to approximately one-half of the original wall thicknesses, and wire 14 having a co-efficient of thermal expansion the same as the tubes is wound under tension about the reduced portions so as to substantially more than offset the weakening in hoop strength due to the reduction. The outside diameter is reduced and the inside diameter remains unchanged so as to provide a uniform flow area after joining. The wire 14 is wound in helical fashion along the reduced axial length B.
