Abstract

706,342. Tube joints. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. May 13, 1952 [May 18, 1951], No. 11691/51. Class 99 (1). [Also in Group XXII] In making pressure-tight joints between tubular members required to operate in a heated condition, such as high pressure steam generators, the members having different co-officients of thermal expansion, one member such as 1, Fig. 1, is provided with circumferential grooves 8 and the other member 2 having the larger expansion is placed within the member 1 and is expanded so as to have intimate contact with member 1 at least on circumferentially continuous parts. The member 1 may be of ferritic steel and member 2 of austenitic steel, extended members 7, 14 of ferritic and austenitic steel respectively being welded at 6, 13 to the members 1, 2. In forming the joint, the member 2 is expanded by a tube-expander 20, such as that described in Specification 686,606, [Group XXII], so as almost to fill the grooves 8 and also to fill four short longitudinal grooves 9 at the open end of member 1, the member 1 being supported by a mild steel ring 15 during the operation. In a superheater, a low temperature portion of ferritic steel may be joined to a. high temperature portion of austenitic steel by the joints of Fig 6.
