Abstract
141,774. Hughes, E. J. Dec. 17, 1918. Metal pipes and tubes.-A collar 2 to form a flange joint is secured to a steel, wrought-iron, or like pipe 1, by a process in which the pipe is heated, secured in a cramp 20 and the protruding end is flanged by means of a roll 22 carried by a member 27 which forces the flange formed on the pipe 1 into a preferably undercut groove 4 in the collar 2, the flanging process being similar to that described in Specification 140,496, [Class 99 (i), Pipes and tubes, Joints &c. for]. The groove 4 is of practically the same thickness as the pipe 1, and the finished flange, as shown in Fig. 7. The inside corner of the flange 10 is thickened by the rolling process, an intermediate stage of which is shown in Fig. 5. The finished flange need not be machined. Holes 6 for receiving securing bolts are formed through the collar 2 only, or through the collar and the flange 7.
