Flanging. - In a process of flanging pipes of ductile iron such as Bessemer or open-hearth steel or wrought iron, the end of the pipe is heated, and then supported externally near its end, and rolled under pressure exerted in a direction substan. tially parallel to the axis of the pipe until the flange contacts with an abutment. Flanges with parallel faces are thus produced, and sections can be bolted together without the use of reinforcing collars. The end of the pipe 1 is first heated sufficiently to produce appreciable outward deformation thereof, and is then secured near the end in clamps 15 so as to allow unrestricted radial flow, and acted on by a roller 11 freely rotatable in bearings 14 on a head rotating on an axis coincident with that of the pipe. Inwardly and out wardly extending portions 12, 13, Fig. 3, are first produced, which by continual action are converted to the form shown in Fig. 4. Further action displaces the metal outwardly until it reaches the face of the jaws 15, where it is finally rolled, Fig. 6, to a thickness substantially equal to that of the pipe. Inward displacement of the metal produces a square corner during the last stage. The taper on the periphery of the flange may be removed by machining. The width of the flange can be regulated by the amount of projection of the pipe through the jaws 15. If desired, the flange may be rolled to a greater thickness than the wall of the pipe and then reduced by machining. Either the work or roller head may be fed axially, fluid, pressure being preferably used.
