5541. Schitzkowsky, M. March 5. Metal pipes and tubes.-Flanges or thickened portions are formed on hollow bodies of wrought iron or steel, particularly pipes, by bending the material of the body upon itself in two or more folds, either external or internal, and parallel to the axis of the hollow body. A pipe with external folds is shown in Fig. 1. The folded part may be welded solid, or compressed in a hot or cold state to the desired form, Fig. 2. Before welding or compressing, a ring of different material r, Fig. 5, may be introduced where desired, so that in any subsequent machining the added ring may be cut away and the original material of the pipe left untouched.
