Abstract

334,284. Cadman, R., and Howson, R. G. June 4, 1929. Stuffing-box joints. - A yieldable ring 30 is compressed radially by pressure between two o opposed, parallel, radial faces on a nut 24 and a tubular union 14 having an enlarged end portion 17 and a smooth unstepped bore. To adapt the union to pipes of smaller size flanged sleeves 34, 36, Fig. 3, are employed. The flanges 38 may be shaped to prevent outward radial movement of the ring. Alternatively, a bush is screwed into the nut, and a washer is placed between the ring and the union. In a modification two rigid pipes 44 are joined by a flexible union 40, Fig. 4, and the nuts 24 compress the rings 30 against the ends of the pipes.
