Abstract

215,101. Kelvin, Bottomley, & Baird, Ltd., and Field, M. B. Feb. 3, 1923. Indicators actuated by pressure of head of liquid of the kind described in Specification 114,851 have the bend of the inverted U-tube comprising the gauge distant from the boiler immersed in water at boiler pressure to prevent leakage at the joints. The chamber 1, Fig. 2, having a sill 1<x> and depending tubes 2, 3 is connected directly to the steam space of the boiler by a short tube and may have cooling fins and condensing tubes connected to the boiler. The chamber 1 and tube 2 may be connected to the boiler through the fittings of the usual gauge glass 6. The gauge consists of an inverted U-tube at the ends of the tubes 2, 3 comprising a glass tube 7<1>, Fig. 5, the water level in which corresponds with the boiler water level and a metal tube 8 having a section 8<1> of glass the level in which corresponds with the level of the sill 1<x>. The bend 9 is contained in a chamber 12 connected by a tube 14 to the tube 8. In a modification, the tubes 7<x>, 8<x>, Fig. 6, are seated in a cover 18, packing pieces 19, 20 being spaced apart by a thimble 21, water at boiler pressure being introduced by a tube 24 and passage 18'. Fig. 5 also shows an adjustable scale 10 having an aperture of the same length as the standard gauge glass and a pointer 11 which is set at the level of the water in the tube 8<1>. Another modification comprises an indicating tube 8<1>, Fig. 7, communicating with the large diameter metal tube 8, and enlarged chambers 26, 27 at the bottom of the U-tube having adjustable drain connections 28, 29.
