Abstract

456,131. Liquid resistances. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd., and DAVY, C. H., Babcock House, Farringdon Street, London. June 30, 1936, No. 18148. [Class 37] [See also Groups XX and XIX] The direction and rate of flow of liquids in pipes is determined by introducing a fluid capable of effecting a change in the electrical characteristics of the flowing liquid and detecting such change by electrical methods. The rate of flow is determined from the time interval between the introduction of the modifying fluid and its arrival at the remote detecting devices and the direction of flow by reversing the points of introduction and detection. In the form shown, 1 is a tube connecting two headers 3, 5 of a steam boiler. A hole in the outer wall 4a of the header 5 enables a tube 24 for introducing a saturated solution of sodium sulphate to be inserted near one end of the pipe 1. A hole in the outer wall 4a of the header 5 enables an electrode 15, surrounded by, but insulated at 17 from, a metal shell 14, to be inserted near the other end of the tube 1. The electrodes 14, 15 form one arm of a bridge preferably connected to an alternating current source. A diagonal of the bridge contains a contact rectifier and a moving coil instrument.
