Abstract
605,796. Liquid-level indicators. ARKELL, H. W., GRIMSTON, W. L., and GORDON & CO., Ltd., J. Jan. 4, 1946, No. 407. [Class 123(i)] In liquid-level indicators for highlying steam &c. boilers of the kind in which pipes 10, 11 connected respectively to the water and steam spaces of the boiler, e.g. by the connections 3, 4 of the normal waterlevel gauge 2, form legs of a U-tube, the latter containing at its bottom end an indicating liquid 14 of greater density than the boiler water, and in which dirt traps or separators 16 are provided in the pipes 10, 11 as described in Specification 335,795, [Class 123(i)], the rising pipe 17 in one or both traps is made of substantially greater cross-sectional area over most of its length than the downwardly extending pipe 18. The pipe 17 is preferably restricted at its upper end 17a, and a float 19, such as a hollow stainless steel ball which will sink in water but float on the indicating liquid, may be located within this pipe, the float normally resting on pins &c. 20 in the lower part of the pipe and rising to abut against upper pins 21 to restrict any outward flow of indicating liquid through the said end 17a. A constant water level is maintained in the pipe 11 by a condensate weir 12 at the upper end thereof.
