Indicators actuated by pressure of head of liquid; gauge glasses.- The level of liquid in a boiler 3 is indicated at a distance by allowing the differential action of a column of liquid 6 of constant height, and a column of liquid variable in height with the boiler level to influence a liquid of different density m a gauge glass 8 and reservoir 17. The cross-sectional area of the reservoir is large with respect to that of the gauge glass, and the indicating liquid has twice the density of the liquid in the boiler so that the rise and fall of the indicating liquid will be equal to that of the liquid in the boiler. The pipe 6 is connected to the boiler steam space and contains a reservoir 18, preferably at a predetermined low level of the boiler, at which level the indicating liquid is at zero. The level in the reservoir 18 is maintained constant by a drain line 19 connected to a steam pipe or superheater at boiler pressure, or to a trap. A suitable indicating liquid for use with a boiler is acetylene tetrabromide coloured red.
