Abstract

Indicators actuated by floats.-In apparatus for indicating and recording the fluctuations of the level of water or other liquid in a boiler, tank, &c., the inductance of a coil included in an indicating and recording circuit is varied by a non- magnetic metal sheath which is moved in accordance with the fluctuations or movements. A chamber 1, Fig. 1, connected to the steam and water spaces of a boiler by pipes 2, 3 respectively, contain a float 5 having a sleeve 6, preferably of copper, which is adapted to slide on a tube 4. The tube 4 contains a coil 7 which is supplied from a source of alternating, intermittent, or pulsating current, and is connected to an indicating or recording instrument such as a voltmeter. The tube. 4 may be open at both ends to allow an air current to pass through the tube and cool the coil. A variation of the water level in the boiler causes a displacement of the sleeve 6 along the coil 7 and a corresponding alteration of the inductance. In a modification for measuring large fluctuations of level, a chamber 10, Fig. 2, contains mercury or other liquid 11 into which dips a tube 12 supporting at its upper end an inductance coil 14. The chamber 10 communicates with the liquid tank through a connection 17 and the mercury displaces a float 15, which forms the. sheath, in accordance with the head of liquid in the tank. High and low liquid alarms may be operated by the indicating instrument. The sheath may be arranged inside the inductance coil.
