Flow meters, pressure-actuated. - In apparatus for measuring at a distance the rate of flow of a fluid, of the type comprising a resistance included in an indicating and recording circuit and adapted to be varied by mercury contained in a receptacle which is tilted in accordance with the flow, the resistance is arranged in sections connected to contacts which are arranged in the wall of the receptacle. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 a U-tube having its upper ends connected has a number of contacts L in the leg 1 connected to a series of superposed resistance coils R. The insulating block D which carries the contacts has a groove A which together with the tube 2 contains mercury. A float 3 which moves in accordance with the fluid level above a weir or notch tilts the U-tube and causes the mercury to vary the resistance in the leg 1 and so give an indication on the ammeter E and a record on the ampere-hour meter F. In a modification the resistance coils R are located between the legs 1, 2 and are connected to contacts on a rod which is inserted concentrically in the leg 1. In this form the relation between the variation of current in the indicating circuit and the movement of the floa+, is determined by a system of cams interposed between cables connected to the float and the U-tubes.. In a modification, the U-tube device may be tilted by the vane which is immersed in the fluid transversely of the direction of flow. In another form a cylindrical box which contains mercury is rotatably mounted and has contacts disposed around the periphery and connected to resistance coils. The box may be operated by the float through the intermediary of a rack and pinion. The ends of the U-tube may be open to the atmosphere.
