Abstract
837,343. Gauge glasses. BABCOCK & WILCOX CO. Oct. 31, 1957 [Oct. 31, 1956], No. 34023/57. Class 123(1) Gauge errors in a high pressure boiler gauge glass 60 situated outside the boiler casing 25 at some distance from the boiler drum 63 due to differences in temperature and hence in density of the water in the drum and in the gauge glass are reduced by effecting a flow of water and steam from the drum to the gauge to convey heat to the water column 64 therein. A pipe 65 is connected between the outer end of the lower gauge header 61 and a downcomer 66 from the boiler drum so that in use a flow of water occurs along the header to the region of the lower end of the water column 64 heating the water therein and down the pipe 65 to the downcomer. Furthermore, passages 47 are provided on each side of the column, Fig. 3, and steam from the upper gauge header 62 flows through these passages to heat the column and passes into a pipe 67 wherein it condenses, the condensate returning through the pipe 67 to the downcomer.
