To measure the purity of steam drawn from a system operating under sub-atmospheric pressure, the steam is withdrawn through a valve 2 by condensation in condenser 4 which is arranged at such a height that a flow of condensate is maintained through conductivity meter 15. The water passing through the meter re-enters the system through flow meter 6 and needle valve 19 which controls the rate of flow. Conductivity meter 5, flow meter 6 and a filter 11 are arranged below the steam pipe so that they remain filled with water when the system is not in use.
