Abstract

Gaseous-fuel furnaces.-In the method of heating retorts for low temperature distillation by returning products of combustion to mix with the hot furnace gases, the mixture after flowing round part of the retort is reheated. In one form of apparatus described spent gases are added to the hot gases in the vicinity of the burner, the mixture passes round part of the retort and is then reheated by passing a second burner to which a mixture of fuel and air is supplied, the air to both burners being preheated and the fuel being obtained from a producer. In a modification shown in Fig. 2, the hot gases from the burner o pass through a series of passages q mix with the spent gases at t, pass round part of the. retort, enter the passages s at u, are reheated by the walls thereof and finally pass round the other part of the retorts and leave at v. Part of the spent gases are returned by the fan w and the remainder serve to heat the incoming air x at y.
