Abstract

369,996. Furnace regenerators utilizing waste heat. CHAUDRONNERIES A. F. SMULDERS, Grace-Berleur, Belgium. Dec. 22, 1930, No. 38567. Con. vention date, Jan. 8. [Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii).] Some or all of the products of combustion from the regenerators of coke ovens, glass furnaces, Martin furnaces, &c. are passed directly into a steam boiler, the temperature of such products being increased by preheating the air supplied to the regenerators, using for this purpose the residual heat of the products of combustion, which residual heat cannot be utilized in the boiler on account of its low temperature. Fig. 1 shows two furnaces 1, 2 having regenerators, those of the furnace 1 being supplied at 5 with air at normal temperature and the waste gases from this furnace passing from the regenerators through a pipe 6 to an air heater 3 and chimney 7. Air supplied to the heater 3 at 8 passes by a pipe 9 to the regenerators of the other furnace 2 the products of combustion from which pass direct into the steam boiler 4 and thence to the chimney 10. The regenerators of a single furnace may be divided into two parts corresponding to the furnaces 1, 2. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the boiler 4 and air heater 3 are arranged in series, the boiler being byepassed by a pipe 13 at starting. The air heated in the heater 3 is supplied to the regenerators of the furnace 1, and a valve in the byepass is operated by a thermostat 11 influenced by the temperature of the products of combustion leaving, or of the air entering, the regenerator, so that as this temperature rises a part or the whole of the products are admitted into the boiler. Specification 310,756, [Class 51 (i), Furnaces and kilns, Combustion apparatus of], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also a form in which the air heater and boiler are arranged in parallel. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
