Abstract

200,749. Arthurs, I., Ross, L. W., and Jackson, R. E. Oct. 30, 1922. Clutches, claw.-In means for directing vehicle head-lamps, the lamp mountings comprise pairs of sleeves 22, 33 journaled in ball bearings in casings 10 secured to the vehicle, the upper sleeves carrying lamp-supporting forks 29 and the 'lower sleeves being connected so as to turn with the steering-gear, means being provided for coupling the sleeves when the lamps are required to turn with the front wheels of the vehicle. The coupling- means comprise a third sleeve 42 slidably keyed to the sleeves 22, 33 and adapted to be displaced axially by a spring 40 so as to free the lamp - carrying sleeve 22, thus permitting the lamps to be directed independently on the release of a cable 47 connected to a control lever on the dash. Each coupling-sleeve 42 is provided with teeth 42<a> on its upper edge, which are adapted when the cable 47 is released to the full extent, to engage notches 21 provided in a disc 11 secured to the casing 10, thus locking the lamps against rotation.
