Abstract

249,330. Smetzer, E. A. April 8, 1925. Road-traffic signals on vehicles. - In road vehicles provided with a rear stop signal lamp and a tell-tale lamp on the dash, the lamps are arranged on two circuits, one including both lamps in series and the second having only the stop lamp, and a switch preferably connected to the brake-operating gear is arranged so that the first movement operates both lamps and the succeeding movement breaks the circuit including the tell-tale lamp and closes that having the stop lamp alone. In Fig. 1, a clockwise movement of the switch arm V<3> causes the contacts T<3>, T<4> to be bridged by contact V<4>, so closing circuit z<2> and lighting stop lamp E and tell-tale lamp x. Continued movement of the switch arm V<3> opens the circuit z<2> and closes, by means of contacts T<2>, circuit z<6> having lamp E only. Fig. 14 shows the arrangement in which a tail lamp G is added with its appropriate contacts T<1> on the switch. A plug z' closes the circuit z for the tail lamp when the switch engages the contacts T<1>. Movement of the brake lever W breaks the tail-lamp circuit, lights the stop lamp E and tell-tale lamp x, while further movement of the brake lever W causes the lamp E only to be lighted. Figs. 7 and 10 show the parts of the switch. V<2> is a rotary member having switch arms V<1>, V<3> and a spring contact V<4>, V<6> being the lever connected to the brake lever. T, Fig. 10, is a stationary member having contacts T<1> - - T<4>.
