Abstract

200,691. Jelley, H. July 6, 1922. Universal joints.-A disc or ring, made from layers of rubber and canvas &c. or by moulding and vulcanizing fiberized rubber, e.g. by the method described in Specification 164,895, is bolted between spiders on the driving and driven shafts, the spider bolts passing through reinforcing bosses formed on the disc. Preferably these bosses are chamfered so that the rigidity of the disc diminishes gradually outwards therefrom, and their crowns are of equal diameter to the bolt washers and spider bosses, the edges of which parts are prevented by the bosses from chafing the body of the disc. Barrel-shaped or other bushes of vulcanite or similar semi-rigid material may be vulcanized in the bolt-holes, such bushes increasing the local rigidity and preventing distortion of the bosses under compression. Whether the body of the disc is made of homogeneous fiberized rubber or of layers of rubber and canvas, the bosses may be built up of layers comprising rubber and canvas rings decreasing in diameter outwardly from the disc. Additional local pressure may be applied to the crowns of the bosses in order to squeeze out the rubber and leave practically solid fabric around the bolt-holes.
