Universal joints; securing on shafts.-In universal joints of the type in which a disc of rubber, laminated rubber and fabric, or like flexible material is bolted to spiders on the shaft ends, the disc is provided on one or both surfaces with polygonally-disposed reinforcements having embedded cords or strands, through which the boltholes extend. Preferably these reinforcements are moulded from material of the same flexibility as the disc, and the cords or strands are looped around the bolts. As shown in Fig. 1, reinforcing- members 24 are applied to each face of the disc 21, and are raised into domes where the connecting-bolts 23 pass through them, cup-shaped depressions 3<c>, 11<c> being formed in the spiders 3, 11 respectively and in washers 3d, 11<d>. Strands 25 are prepared in loops of sufficient length to encircle two adjacent bolts and may be so coated that they are united with the reinforcements 24 on vulcanizing. As shown, four strands are provided on each face of the disc, overlapping at the bolt-holes. The spider 3 is secured to a bush 4, keyed to the shaft 1, by corrugations 3b, 4<b>, Fig. 4, a clamping-nut 5, and a washer 6 with a thickened periphery. The bulbous-shaped margin 20 of the bore of the disc 21 is clamped frictionally in a two-part ring 14, 16 taking a rocking-bearing on an extension 8 of the shaft 1. The part 14 has a flange 15 by which it is secured by bolts 10 to a flange 9 of a hollow shaft 2, the spider 11 being secured by the same bolts. A washer 12 is so wedged between the shaft 2 and bent-over parts 11<b> of the spider that the bolts 10 are relieved of shear.
