Abstract
520,671. Universal joints. GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO. March 13, 1939, No. 8028. Convention date, March 26, 1938. [Class 80 (ii)] Concentric inner and outer shaft-heads 14, 17 are drivingly connected by a flexible pneumatic annulus 15, and end-thrust, for example due to a marine propeller shaft, is yieldingly resisted by a rubber ring 19, arranged nearer to the joint axis than the pneumatic annulus so as not to be subjected to excessive deformation when the shafts are misaligned. In Fig. 1. an endless or segmental rubber thrust ring 19 is clamped between double conical elements 20, 22 secured to the respective shafts, the outer element 22 being split and drawn together by bolts 23 to subject the ring to initial compression. The pneumatic annulus 15 is reinforced by radially disposed cords 15a. In Fig. 3, the pneumatic annulus 25 is vulcanised to concentric metal stampings 26, 29, bolted at 31, 35 to the respective shafts, the annulus having an inner integral thrustsustaining portion 37, vulcanised respectively to a flange 28 of the inner member 26 and to a member 36, bearing against a plate 34 attached to the outer member 29 by bolts 32 which subject the thrust-sustaining portion 37 to initial compression.
