Abstract
196,878. Soc. Anon. le Carbone. May 1, 1922, [Convention date]. Arrangements; electrodes; air supplied.-In. a pile of cells joined in series, each cell consists of a zinc disc a covered with blotting paper b impregnated with a solution of ammonium chloride and zinc or calcium chloride, above which is a disc c of paste electrolyte and a disc d of charcoal covered where it is liable to come into contact with electrolyte with a colloidal substance preventing the passage of moisture but allowing gas to pass. The colloidal substance may consist of a paste of 1.75 kg. of fecula and 2 litres of water mixed with 18 litres of water heated to 75‹ C. The disc c may have the same composition as the colloidal substance but with the addition of 7 kg. of ammonium chloride to the heated water. The pile may be enclosed in a casing having a square cross-section and apertures at the top and bottom. When the battery is exhausted it is immersed for a short time in a solution of ammonium chloride which passes through the apertures in the casing and becomes absorbed in the discs b, c. The discs may also be formed with holes to form internal passages to allow acces of air and electrolyte.
