[Class 53] In a dry cell, the electrolyte paste on one electrode is caused by pressure, either selfgenerated or provided manually, to penetrate deeper into a de-polarizing layer as the battery is used. The de-polarizer is particularly atmospheric oxygen in active carbon, with or without indigo white, cerium salts &c. though de-polarizers of the perbolate or persulphate type may be used. In the example, an electrolyte paste E containing ammonium chloride, zinc chloride and wheat flour rests on a zinc trough Z in an insulating casing B. The carbon electrode K is in the upper part of the casing, which is perforated as at L for admission of atmospheric oxygen. The space D is filled with a de-polarizer such as a mixture of active carbon graphite and ammonium chloride. Pressure rises in the cell owing to expansion in use, but in addition a screw S may be provided to force the zinc plate Z upwards.
