A dry primary cell has a cathode 1 of carbon or iron surrounded by a mix 2 of mercuric oxide and carbon which is wrapped in a bibulous paper 3 impregnated by a caustic potash electrolyte. The anode consists of a zinccoated bibulous paper 4 surrounded by a zinc member 11 which is in turn enclosed by a magnesium can 5 having its internal surface coated with zinc, preferably zinc amalgam. The can 5 has a sheath 9 of polyvinyl chloride. Specifications 623,888 and 662,774 are referred to in the Provisional Specification.
