Abstract

228,872. Soc. Anon. le Carbone. Feb. 9, 1924, [Convention date]. Absorbents; electrodes.-In a dry battery the depolarizing substance is mixed with the colloidal substance in which the electrolyte is solidified. As described, a circular zinc electrode b covered with absorbent paper impregnated with zinc chloride and a carbon electrode d are placed in a receptacle a of glass, wood covered with tarred canvas, ebonite &c. Fecula and ammonium chloride are separately dissolved in water heated to 80-90‹ C., the two solutions mixed with or without a small proportion of hygroscopic substance, and allowed to cool to about 30‹ C. The viscous liquid thus obtained is mixed to paste with finely powdered wood charcoal. The paste is run into the vessel a which is then covered with an insulating layer g having perforations h to permit access of air. The particles of depolarizer become individually coated with a thin pectised film impermeable to liquids but permeable to gases, and shrinkage of the colloid produces craclis serving as channels allowing access of air to the particles.
