Abstract
180,982. Soc. Anon. Le Carbone. June 3, 1921, [Convention date]. Air or gases supplied; electrodes; carbon electrodes, making.-A cell employing zinc and carbon electrodes g, a in a solution of ammonium chloride is provided round the carbon electrode with a conducting porous mass b of wood charc o a 1 agglomerate, which projects at its upper end into the atmosphere to assist depolarization. To prevent the mass b from becoming saturated with electrolyte it is surrounded with a layer of material c which is only slightly pervious to liquids. This layer may consist of a jelly similar to that used as the electrolyte absorbent in dry cells, and is contained in a porous jar d closed by wax &c. e. The wood charcoal is agglomerated under high pressure and is burnt to eliminate the hydrocarbons contained in the agglomerating agent. A dry cell may be made by dispensing with the jar d and material c and using a fixed electrolyte in a zinc vessel which forms one electrode. The carbon electrode with the surrounding mass of wood charcoal both extend into the atmosphere through the wax closure at the top of the cell. The carbon electrode may consist of several strips of ordinary carbon alternating with strips of wood charcoal agglomerate, the whole being pressed together. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), describes also a modification in which the charcoal instead of being agglomerated merely surrounds the electrode and is enclosed in a canvas bag; it may be mixed with better conductors such as plumbago. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
