Abstract
190,101. Soc. Anon. le Carbone. Dec. 9, 1921, [Convention date]. Electrodes; a'ir or gases supplied; arrangement.-A primary cell consists of a carbon electrode f surrounded by an agglomerate g of porous carbon such as wood charcoal capable of absorbing gases, the upper end of the agglomerate being exposed to the atmosphere. The charcoal mav be covered with manganese dioxide and plumbago. A perforated zinc electrode a closed at the bottom surrounds the carbon electrode and stands in an outer vessel containing a solution of ammonium chloride, the inner wall of the zinc being lined with blotting paper, filter paper or felted material. In order to allow the electrolyte to evaporate within the pores of the charcoal agglomerate without saturating the same, the space between the agglomerate and the zinc electrode is filled with a jelly i consisting for example of starch and a solution of zinc chloride. The zinc electrode mav be of less thickness at the lower end than at the top and is closed by wax &c. j. Contact between the electrodes may be prevented by a cord carrying insulating beads h surrounding the agglomerate g. The carbon electrode f may be hollow and provided with perforations to allow access of air to the entire length of the agglomerate g which may also be formed with vertical passages. The agglomerate g may consist of two blocks held against the sides of a flat carbon electrode, and conducting substances such as graphite, metal &c. may be incorporated in the agglomerate to reduce the resistance of the cell. ln another modification discs of agglomerated porous carbon are threaded upon the carbon electrode, the discs being separated by discs of retort carbon, all of which may be provided with vertical passages. In a further modification the agglomerate is in the form of small pellets which project at both ends through the walls of a hollow carbon electrode, the inner ends of the pellets being formed with ribs or wings to increase the surface in contact with the air. Specification 180,982 is referred to.
