Abstract
392,208. Batteries. PENNOCK, A.G. L., 95, Deodar Road, Putney, London. Oct. 15, 1931, Nos. 28674/31 and 31973/32. [Class 53.] A single fluid primary cell comprises electrodes of aluminium and copper, iron or other metal separated by a layer of absorbent material such as pitch pine pulp. The electrodes and absorbent material may be wound into a spiral and the electrolyte, which may be a solution of caustic soda or potash, may be fed to the electrodes by wicks or other capillary devices. A small quantity of the hydrate or carbonate or other salt of lithium or other electronemitting material may be added to the electrolyte. The Figure shows a cell in which aluminium and copper'sheets separated by an absorbent material are wound spirally round a rod 2 and are contained in a metal sheath 7 which is open at both ends and is supported within a vessel 8. The vessel 8 is divided into two compartments by a ring 11 which may allow electrolyte placed in the upper compartment to percolate into the lower compartment and saturate absorbent material 12. The electrolyte is fed to the electrodes by wicks 17 which depend from a wick covering the upper surfaces of the electrodes. Alternatively the electrolyte may be fed through nozzles above the cell, the required pressure being obtained by the gas evolved in the cell. A dry cell may be made by placing solid electrolyte on the absorbent sheet between the electrodes and supplying water when the cell is required for use or allowing it to absorb atmospheric moisture.
