Abstract
557,310. Batteries. POOK, H. W., and BATTERY CONSTRUCTION, Ltd. Aug. 27, 1942, No. 12074. [Class 53] A container for a dry cell of the layer type consists of a shallow zinc tray 1 having a hole 3 in the bottom, and a flat zinc lid 2 fixed to the tray 1 by soldering, brazing, or welding. The tray contains a sheet 16 of insulating material, a layer 5 of carbonaceous material consisting of a mixture of carbon or graphite with a waterproof binder, a thin metal plate or gauze 6 having a lug 15 used to make connection with the carbonaceous material, a depolarizing mixture 8, a diaphragm 9, and electrolyte paste 11. The paste 11 may be injected, through a hole 10, after the lid 2 is soldered to the tray 1. An expansion chamber may be provided by leaving a space at one side of the depolarizer, Fig. 3 (not shown), or by forming a separate chamber to which there is access from the paste 11, Fig. 5 (not shown), or by shaping the lid 2 to form a recess 12, Fig. 4, covered by a perforated zinc plate 13 covered by a piece of paper 14 which breaks down during use to allow the paste 11 to flow into the space 12. When several cells are formed into a battery they are separated by sheets of insulating material connection from each cell to the next being made by the lug 15.
