Abstract
297,400. Jackson, L. Mellersh-, (Burgess Laboratories, Inc., C. F.). June 13, 1927. Electrodes; connections.-The anode of a dry cell is made in the form of a shallow perforated pan, the interior of which forms an expansion chamber for the electrolyte which is situated on the other side of the pan. Fig. 7 shows one form of anode consisting of a zinc pan 1 having perforations 2 and a larger opening 3 in the centre. Two of the edges 5 are serrated and projections 4 are provided to support a separator and the cathode which rest of the anode. Fig. 4 shows a portion of the cathode which consists of a metal plate 18 supporting a mixture 22 of a carbonaceous material and a binder such as graphite, carbon and paraffin. Above this mix- ,ture is placed the depolarizer consisting of graphite and manganese dioxide. Fig. 1 shows a complete battery consisting of three cells each comprising a cathode and depolarizer 18, 22, 26 surrounded by an insuating collar 24 which supports the pan-shaped zinc anode 1. The electrolyte is introduced into each cell through the opening 3 in the anode. Above the zinc pan 1 is a paper sheet 26 and the cathode of the adjacent cell. The plate 18 of each cathode projects at each end and is turned down and forced over the serrated edges of the adjacent zinc pan and the joint completed by soldering. Instead of the panshaped anode being made completely of zinc it may consist of a zinc sheet with an insulating frame. The cathode may also take several forms. In one modification the plate 18 is replaced by wire gauze. In another modification a carbon plate is used instead of the metal plate 18, the edges of the carbon plate being plated with metal. Connection is made to the adjacent anode by a soldered metal strip. The carbonaceous mixture 22 may be replaced by a layer of carbon particles attached to the plate 18 by adhesive. The complete battery may be inserted in a pasteboard casing which is filled and sealed with pitch &c. Specification 128,332 is referred to.
