Abstract
340,429. Galvanic batteries. SCHMID, A., 5, Pelikanweg, Basle, Switzerland, and METROPOLE DEVELOPMENTS, Ltd., Metropole House, Finsbury Square, London. Jan. 29, 1930, No. 3068. [Class 53.] Absorbents; electrolytes; charges in packages; electrodes.-A depolarizing electrolyte comprising an oxidizing material and an acid is contained in a cellular carrier from which the electrolyte is only gradually dissolved out on immersion in water. The electrolyte may consist of sulphuric acid and chromic acid or a bichromate, and the carrier may be a perforated lead vessel divided by partitions into compartments or it may consist of a block of porous material impregnated with the electrolyte. Such a block may be made by mixing kieselguhr with a binding medium such as sodium silicate with or without a carbonaceous material such as cork or sawdust, pressing the mixture in a mould, drying, and baking at a red heat. The block is first saturated with a solution of the oxidizing material, dried, and then saturated with the acid. Fig. 2 shows the finished block 1 provided with a protective covering consisting of caps 2, 3 of lead and a winding 4 of thin sheet lead, the joints being waterproofed with paraffin wax. When the block is to be used, the winding 4 is stripped off. A piece of zinc 5 forming one electrode may be attached to the carrier but insulated by a layer 6 of cardboard &c.
