Abstract

136,282. Joel, H. F. Dec. 16, 1918. Cells; separators; supports for electrodes; circulating liquids; gas exits, collectors, and absorbers. -A storage battery in which the electrolyte is absorbed in porous material is provided with a reservoir 1 for containing an additional supply of electrolyte. The reservoir is made of porous material, such as wood or earthenware, and may be perforated as shown at 13, the perforations being covered with a porous substance which may be the active material of the electrodes. The reservoir, as shown in Fig. 1, has top and bottom flanges 8, 18 and partitions 2 as shown in plan in Fig. 2, to form spaces 4, 5 to contain the electrodes. The reservoir is closed by a plug 7, in which gases generated in the battery collect, the pressure assisting the diffusion of the electrolyte through the walls of the reservoir. The spaces 4, 5 are filled with felt or spun glass, which may also be used to fill the reservoir. A vent tube 12 is provided, and the space between the flange 8 of the reservoir and the lid 10 is filled with powdered pumice to absorb vapours. In a modification, the partitions 2 are horizontal, and, in a further modification, Fig. 5, one of the electrodes 3 is contained in the reservoir 1, which may be of perforated non-porous material, a layer of asbestos paper or thin wood 14 being provided to aid diffusion of the electrolyte. The lid 16 is of the kind described in Specification 1525/15. The plug 7 may be vented, and is provided with a depending tube 15 into which gases pass from the reservoir.
